BESS deployment and the important role of hybridization in Spain

Luis Alvargonzalez on the positive impacts of increasing BESS deployment and the important role of hybridization to deliver benefits to the electricity system.
Our Country Manager in Spain, Luis Alvargonzalez, joined other industry leaders and policymakers at the UNEF Storage & Hydrogen Summit in Madrid on March 4th.
As part of the opening session on "Energy storage strategy in the electricity system", Luis focused on the positive impacts of increasing BESS deployment and the important role of hybridization to deliver benefits to the electricity system.
During the discussions, Luis noted: "The sector is keen to see a swift implementation of the hybridization permitting timelines included in RD 1997/2025.
"It is important to recognize the difference in demand applications for storage projects, which address energy supply - compared to those from industrial projects, which increase energy demand.
"Allocating demand for hybrid projects is critical. Storage capacity able to charge from the grid coupled with generation offers the optimal solution for re-balancing the system."
Luis also noted that the industry is keen to see a review of the 83GW of generation permits that have already been awarded. "Projects that are not going to be built in 2027 and 2028 should be offered an exit window to prioritize new projects, new storage capacity especially."
